Most "metal carports" sold in Austin are 12-gauge prefab kits that arrive flat-packed and get bolted together in a few hours. They're cheap, they look fine on day one, and they have a real habit of failing right when you need them most. At Hill Country Mobile Welding, we build metal carports the way they should be built: welded together on your property, anchored properly, and sized exactly to the vehicles you actually own.
Sizing Your Metal Carport
The wrong size is the most common carport mistake. A standard "single carport" is 12'×20', fine for a sedan, useless for a long-bed truck or anything with a roof rack. A standard "double" is 18'×20', fine for two compact cars, tight for two pickups. We measure your vehicles and your usable space before we quote, and we'll tell you the size that actually works, not just the size the catalog lists.
Common sizes we build:
- Single vehicle: 12'×20' to 14'×24'
- Double vehicle: 18'×24' to 22'×26'
- Triple vehicle: 24'×30' and up
- Custom dimensions: any size your property allows
Material & Construction
We work with structural-gauge steel (typically 14-gauge or heavier, well above the 18-gauge used in prefab kits), powder-coated or galvanized for Texas UV and humidity. Roofs are corrugated steel or standing seam, your choice.
Every joint is welded, not bolted, and every weld is coated to prevent rust before it starts. The result is a structure that doesn't shake loose, doesn't rust at the seams, and doesn't need annual tightening.
Custom vs. Prefab Metal Carports
A prefab metal carport from a big-box installer typically costs $1,500–$3,500. A custom welded carport from us typically costs $3,500–$6,500. The difference: ours lasts 25+ years without major repair, theirs lasts 5–10 if you're lucky. If you're staying in your home long-term, the custom build pays for itself in not having to replace it.
